Why It's a Standout: Located in the hip Marais neighborhood, the bar of this buzzy taqueria is hidden in the back where colorful murals, patterned throw pillows and DIY-looking light fixtures create a laid-back atmosphere. The trio who opened the space worked at local hot spots Experimental Cocktail Club and The Moose before striking out on their own in 2011 with a bar that serves rare mezcals and homemade juices such as the sangrita, the traditional chaser to tequila. One of Chicago's top bartenders, Paul McGee of Paris Club Bistro and Bar, loves how "effortlessly cool" Candelaria is. "To me, Candelaria has it all: great atmosphere, friendly and talented staff, and delicious drinks."
The Drink to Order: Says McGee, "One that stood out was a Sherry Cobbler with Olorosso Sherry, fresh citrus, and strawberries. It's such a simple drink but with plenty of complexity and very well executed."
