Having your subject camouflaged amid an interesting background can certainly make for a cool shot. Generally, though, it's advantageous to have a subject "pop" compared to whatever is behind it. To accomplish that, "look for contrasting colors, and frame the subject so that it doesn't get lost in a messy background," Winter suggests.
