Red Yeast Rice – fermented rice crossed with a fungus – was actually the chemical basis for statin drugs in the 1970s. The supplement works the same way as the statin drugs, inhibiting the production of cholesterol in the liver. One small Norwegian study showed a 23 percent drop in LDL after 16 weeks on the stuff. Be warned: This is the natural version of a potent pharmaceutical, so best to take it under the supervision of a physician. It could cause side effects similar to statins', such as muscle damage or raised blood-sugar levels.
