We dropped them, sprayed them with a hose, and kicked sand on the toughest water-resistant outdoor speakers to find out which ones are really worth taking on your next adventure. To simulate the abuse these speakers might face at a campsite, beach, or pool, we subjected them to dirt, sand, water, and drops of up to 5 feet. Audio quality was checked before and after, and the ratings reflect both sound and ruggedness.
Skullcandy Air Raid
The Air Raid has a great design, with big buttons and controls and a removable, wraparound, rubberized shell that absorbed drops without a mark, and was easily rinsed of dirt and grit. The audio quality was not as impressive – there were rich tones at lower volumes; as we turned it up the sound began to distort. [$150; skullcandy.com]
