Kentucky: Bourbon Country Lodging
Louisville has a rich history of great hotels – from the Seelbach, which inspired parts of 'The Great Gatsby,' to the Brown, where the Hot Brown sandwich was born. So it's surprising that the city's top lodging (and perhaps the country's) is the newest: 21c Museum Hotel is an edgy, buzzing boutique hotel that doubles as a contemporary art gallery. There are Corvette-red penguins, portraits of nude Yakuza gangsters, and a life-size bronze satyr sitting on the bar, which, incidentally, serves equally artful cocktails and flights of bourbon, the one reminder that you're still in Kentucky.
Getting there: Fly into Louisville and then drive on I-64 to 21c Museum Hotel. Rooms start at $280 per night.
