Virginia: Boozy Bluegrass
Perched atop the Appalachian Mountains of southwest Virginia, the one-stoplight town of Floyd has been striking a hillbilly/hipster balance since the late 1960s. It's the kind of place where you sip a fair-trade espresso or try some local moonshine. You can't just order a jug of white lightning at the Floyd Country Store – which hosts a famous Friday Night Jamboree where locals clog to hotshot bluegrass pickers. You may need to ask as many as three locals before forking over $20 for a quart.
Getting there: From the Roanoke airport, drive an hour to Floyd.
