The fact that every cutting edge, top-of-the-line smartphone is outclassed by another model within months (or weeks) of release has an upside: There's a glut of great smartphones that are unbelievably cheap. Provided you qualify for a new-phone discount, the array of high-quality smartphones that can be had for less than $100 is impressive. We're not hyping a bunch of consolation prizes or bargain-bin finds. These handsets prove that spending more than a c-note for a new smartphone is as obsolete as a Blackberry.

Samsung Galaxy S4
Intended to be Samsung's shot across the iPhone's bow, the Galaxy S4 has become one of the most ubiquitous Android phones in the world, thanks in large part to near-instant price drops. And though Sprint still wants just under $100 for it, most shoppers should be able to get an S4 for nothing, a ridiculous deal considering its excellent 13-megapixel camera and slew of shooting options and modes, as well as its expandable storage (it has a slot for microSD cards). And for those who hope to make their phones last as long as possible, the coolest feature by far is the user-replaceable battery.
