Cancel Your Cards
Whatever the initial sign of profound identity theft may have been — it’s likely to be through a bank, debt collector, or similar source, denying or asking for funds — it’s time to sprint through all of your credit cards, debit cards, IRAs, and anything else tied directly to your money, and shut them down. Don’t close accounts, but ask for immediate holds, and new account numbers and cards. Speed is obviously essential, because your enemy (and he or she is most definitely your enemy) is actively wreaking havoc behind your financial defenses. Shore those up, and eject the enemy, by making all of that stolen data irrelevant.
