Change Your Passwords, Starting With E-Mail
After embracing your panic, it’s time to give in to paranoia. Most identity thieves aren’t master criminals, or particularly thorough in penetrating more than one aspect of your life. But assume that the enemy is a rapacious genius, and that he or she is able to intercept the bulk of your online communication, via your hacked email accounts. Change those passwords first, and then all of the rest. And we do mean all of them, since even seemingly innocuous sites and services can provide clues for the dedicated doppelgänger, and back doors into bank accounts or other critical services.
