Set Up Fraud Alerts
In the U.S., there are three national credit reporting agencies: Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. These companies aren’t often your friends, because they’re primary job is to snitch on you during difficult times. But when you contact one of them with a fraud alert, these agencies are required to lend assistance. Whichever one you reach will in turn contact the other two, and all three will block the creation of new accounts in your name, if those involve a credit check of some kind. Fraud alerts last for 90 days, so remember to re-file if it seems like the identity burglary is ongoing.
