Arizona State University's Skin Cell Condoms
Shengxi Chen, a researcher at the Biodesign Institute at Arizona State University, is not looking to recreate the condom from the ground up. Instead, his Gates-funded project involves attaching a chemical molecule to the surface of now-available condoms to make them mimic human cells. "We tried to make the condom totally look like the cell membrane. In this way we think these new condoms should be very close to the feeling of normal skin," says Chen. The condom would be more breathable but still protective against STDs and pregnancy. The molecule they intend to use is also known to stimulate both male and female arousal, so it could potentially help with loss of erection.
