University of Manchester's Graphene Composite Condom
Aravind Vijayaraghavan, a lecturer in Nanomaterials at University of Manchester, also received a Gates Foundation grant for a condom made from a new material. He is looking into a composite of latex and graphene, which would have added strength that would potentially allow for thinner condoms. "A composite material, generally — if you do it right — has better properties than the original materials you started with. So we're trying to improve the properties of the latex by adding graphene into it," says Vijayaraghavan. There has been a lot of work done on graphene composites that combine graphene with other materials but Vijayaraghavan still predicts that it will be some time before this condom makes it to market because of the complications involved with getting condoms approved.
