"In the olden days, people said drivers went full throttle 75 percent of the time because the machinery was so fragile," Baime says. "Today, I'd say it’s more like 90 percent of the time." To reduce driver fatigue (and prevent accidents), measures have been put in place. The team size has been increased from two people to three, and no one member can drive for more than 14 hours total. Still, depending on the weather and random luck, somewhere around 20 cars of the 55-team field might not finish.
