The Circuit de la Sarthe is an 8.47-mile course that follows public roads along the edge of town and out into the countryside. It has an oblong shape, and it has been modified 12 times to keep the increasingly more powerful cars from reaching unsafe speeds. As a result, no straightaway exceeds 1.2 miles. The longest stretch — the Mulsanne Straight — takes the drivers down the entire length of the backstretch where two chicanes have been added to slow the overwhelming pace. At the top of the homestretch, the course takes a hard left turn at the Indianapolis Arnage and winds through the Porsche Curves before bending around the Ford Chicanes and continuing back through the starting line.
