The Disaster: Due to the current conflict in neighboring Sudan an estimated 180,000 refugees have crossed into Ethiopia prompting camps to be built in undesirable areas on potential floodplains. When heavy rains settled into the area in September, officials' worst fears were realized as numerous rivers in the Gambella, Afar, and Somali regions jumped their banks and inundated camps, destroying shelters, and drowning infrastructure.
State of Recovery: Best estimates for displaced individuals are at 50,000 with the Leitchuor and Nip Nip camps bearing the brunt of it. The United Nations, Red Crescent Society, and UNICEF are spearheading efforts to relocate families and deliver basic commodities like food and fresh water.
