The obstacle race boom has made its way to the U.S., and with it, more events than you could ever enter. Needless to say, not all obstacle races are equal. There are now DIY events run by nobodies with land and some construction know-how, big-time pretenders out to make a buck. The real-deal events have it all: a challenging course, a fun after-party, and participants that make the just-right atmosphere. Here are seven of the best, plus how they stand out. Launch Gallery >>
Run for Your Lives
Distance: 3.2 miles
Obstacles: 10–12 obstacles and hundreds of zombies
Difficulty: "The zombie apocalypse can happen anywhere," says Derrick Smith, a co-founder of this race-meets-theatrical-production. Likewise, the terrain for Run for Your Lives varies from flat to hilly, depending on the venue. The added difficulty, of course, is zombies, who can "kill" you by taking all three of the red flags from your belt.
The Vibe: It's all about zombie kitsch with blood pits, abandoned buildings, and trails that dead-end into zombie hoards.
Cost: $67–$87; runforyourlives.com
