Best for: Money and cards in a handcrafted, artisanal package.
Straight out of Romania comes a brand we've been drooling over for a while now. Dreamed up in a cobbler's shop in 1955, Atelier Pall is now a large, family-owned leather studio putting out an array of beautiful handcrafted goods.
Out of all the unique wallet designs offered, this duotone number stands out. It feels both slim and burly. The leather used is a bit thicker than you might expect, but the simple and efficient design keeps it to front-pocket dimensions. The build quality is tight and clean, with beeswax-burnished edges and serious stitch work. This thing could last a very long time with very heavy use.
The minimalist "little book" style splits the difference between a classic billfold and a credit card wallet. Open it up and the mouths of two internal pockets – each made of one piece of leather, folded – face each other. They're stitched to the wallet's outside at the sides only, and they feature a tabbed slot for two cards. These suspended pockets create two exterior slots, so you can easily tuck things away quickly without opening the wallet. And whatever you've stashed is waiting behind the pockets next time you crack open your little book. Great little details. [$50; atelierpall.com]
