The Plot Against America, Philip Roth
Philip Roth might be America's best living novelist, and this 2004 novel is one of his best. An alternative history, the novel imagines that Charles Lindbergh — the aviator and notorious anti-Semite — is elected president in 1940, and quickly signs a peace treaty with Nazi Germany. Lindbergh is opposed in his reelection bid by radio celebrity Walter Winchell, who is assassinated in short order. Roth based the novel partly on his own childhood in New Jersey, where he and his friends were often bullied because they were Jewish.
