Wag the Dog, Larry Beinhart
One of the most deeply cynical novels of the 1990s, Beinhart's satire tells the story of a spin doctor hired to draw attention away from a sex scandal involving the president. He hires a Hollywood director to manufacture a war with Albania, hoping to draw press attention away from the scandal. The ending is brilliant, if supremely disillusioning. The novel inspired a 1997 film with Robert De Niro and Dustin Hoffman; both the book and the movie proved sadly prescient, at least to some dispirited political observers.
