Watergate, Thomas Mallon
Published 40 years after the Watergate scandal made headlines, Mallon's brilliant novel is by far the best fictional look at the Nixon presidency ever. The book focuses on seven people involved in the scandal, including Nixon's attorney general Elliot Richardson, and his secretary, Rose Mary Woods (of the missing 18 minutes fame). Mallon's novel is the farthest thing from a polemic; instead, he concentrates on the absurd aspects of the Watergate affair. It's brilliantly written, and surprisingly funny.
