Shure MV88: A Digital Microphone for Your Smartphone
Microphone manufacturer Shure debuted a compact digital mic at CES that attaches to an iPhone, iPad or iPod's lightning connector. Finally. The MV88 fills a niche that, until now, has consisted largely of overpriced novelty acts with good-enough build-quality and performance. This mic is a far more serious piece of engineering, with an all-metal build and secure articulation (for angling it towards your subject). It captures stereo audio at 24-bit/48 kHz, and the free app modifies recording settings for specific environments and situations. It can open up the stereo width for a concert, for a more immersive sound, or narrow it for dictation. You can also individually tweak those and other settings, including some advanced ones that only an audio engineer or salty podcasting vet would appreciate. It's that kind of over-engineering that makes this mic so desirable. The MV88 will be available this summer for $149.
