Sony Action Cam FDR-X1000V: The Would-Be GoPro Killer
Most action cam-makers seem content to let GoPro dominate the category, settling instead for models with cheaper price points or more specialized features. But with its new 4K action cam, it's obvious that Sony is nowhere near ready to concede defeat. The FDR-X1000V's specs are almost identical to the GoPro Hero 4 Black's, including 4K recording at up to 30 frames per second (for displaying on UHD TVs, or for cropping during editing) and full HD recording at up to 120 frames. It comes with a similarly rugged waterproof case, and will cost the same. The big difference between the two premium action cams — and it is a big one — is the Sony model's electronic image stabilization. We'll have to comparison-test them to confirm that there's a noticeable reduction in camera shake, but Sony knows its evolving market, singling out the vibration from drone rotors as something that the camera should offset. The FDR-X1000V will be out in February for $500.
