Working under a $24 million DARPA grant, researchers at Duke University have taught a South American owl monkey named Belle to move a telerobotic arm "simply by thinking about it." First they trained Belle to move a robotic arm manually. Then they implanted 100 sensors into her brain, and she repeated the movements on equipment 600 miles away. The hope is that the same technology will eventually enable fighter pilots to fly missions just by thinking about them: planes aloft, pilots on the ground.
