The Drinking, Casual Sex Correlation
Walsh and her colleagues took 13 months of data from women in their first year of college regarding various health behaviors. One of the studies that came from this data revealed a strong relationship between the kinds of sexual partners women had and whether they drank before having sex. Looking at the women's most recent sexual encounters, nine percent of those who slept with a romantic partner used alcohol (five percent had binge drank, which is four or more drinks). For women who had slept with a casual partner, 53 percent drank beforehand, 38 percent binged. Sex with a stranger involved alcohol 89 percent of the time, 63 percent of the time there was binge drinking. However, there could be reasons for this trend beyond the assumption that alcohol equals risky sex. "It could be that there are certain personality traits that lead people both to wanting to engage in drinking and to wanting to engage in more casual forms of sex," says Walsh.
