Interstates and major superhighways are fast and easy ways to travel from sea to shining sea, but you miss most everything in between when you're cruising by at 85. So get off the main road and explore this great country of ours, the small towns, the roadside attractions, the diners. For ideas check out websites Fodors, Roadside America, and Sherman's Travel ahead of time for hints on what routes are worth the detour. And don't be afraid to visit travel chat rooms and forums to hit up inveterate road warriors for the real hidden gems on your route.
