If you want fresh breath but aren't craving candy, skip suckers like Certs mints that contain a lot of sugar. Although Certs can temporarily reduce bad breath, the sugar feeds odor-causing bacteria, allowing them to multiply. Sugar-free gums like Stride, however, contain xylitol, a natural substance found in vegetables and fruit that, says cosmetic dentist Pia Lieb, "is actually good for your teeth because it kills bacteria and fights cavities."
