Don't you hate it when your favorite film or music festival gets too commercial? So many annual gatherings — from Coachella to SXSW — are hitting critical mass, with tickets selling out at light speed and lodging nearly unattainable to anyone without a personal assistant. Robert Redford recently addressed the issue in relation to his own Sundance Film Festival: "As it grew, so did the crowds, and so did the development in Park City. If both those things continue to grow, they're going to begin to choke each other. So then I have to think about, Do we now risk being who we are in the first place?" Luckily, there are plenty of festivals free of the corporate chokehold that all offer fantastic all-around experiences for the adventurous arts enthusiast.
