For a hall of fame athlete whose legendary career is still, decades later, overshadowed by his even more notorious temper tantrums, it comes as no surprise that McEnroe is more than familiar with the importance of self-control. In particular, he says, he has always relied on the pacifying effects of controlled breathing. "As you get older, you realize it's extremely important and I'm not good at it like when I was playing," he says. "It's something I really want to focus on a little more." McEnroe says he doesn't subscribe to any one discipline, such as yogic breathing: "It's just an awareness, a heightened awareness of your breathing.
