Thoroughbred horseracing is big business for Pitino off the court. He is the lead partner in Celtic Pride Stable and the Ol Memorial Stable and owns a five percent share of Goldencents, who won the 2013 Santa Anita Derby and finished 17th at the 2013 Kentucky Derby. On the track, there isa bit of role reversal: He is the one being recruited by eager trainers.
"The one thing you look for in horse trainers more than anything else is integrity," he says. "Yhey don't overbill you; they look out for the owner's interest; they're fun to be around; they're upbeat, positive people."
Pitino also looks to be treated like a respectable customer, not pushed around like a novice. That's not only rude, but indicative of a person valuing themself over others, a trait that can lead to questionable decision making come race time.
