To insulate against winter's chill, seek out a barley wine–style ale. Born in Britain, this burly, warming, sweet, and fruity beer is best savored by the snifter (preferably alongside a fireplace, naturally). American versions, especially those hailing from the West Coast, tend to be hoppier than their British counterparts. A few favorite examples include Anchor Old Foghorn, Sierra Nevada Bigfoot, Hair of the Dog's Fred, and Rogue XS Old Crustacean.
