Size, species, age, condition – these factors all affect the price of an animal mount. So, when shopping around, it's important to keep in mind what you actually want. How important is it that your elk head be museum quality? Would a slightly tattered, but clearly well-made white-tailed deer look just as good in the den? When buying cervine game, another thing to keep in mind is the size of the antlers.

"The trophy aspect will definitely affect the price," Rhymer says. "Do you really need a deer or elk or moose with an enormous rack? If you don't care and it doesn't matter, just get one with a small rack."
