Step Six: Get Everyone On Board
If you're married, getting out of debt must be a team effort. "Opposites attract, and usually in every couple there's a spender and a saver," says Kofke. If the spender isn't 100 percent committed to getting your family finances on track, Kofke says you need a marriage counselor, not a financial planner. "You have to be on the same page. It's not your money and my money. When you said 'I do' you became part of a team." The good news is that eliminating your debt can be a huge help to your relationship. "It can strengthen your marriage," says Kofke.
