Few topics are as rich with options, or as deeply disorienting, as the modern international call. As straightforward as a scheduled Skype-to-Skype conversation might be, overseas travel tends to unravel the best-laid plans, as wifi connections become scarce, phones refuse to connect to local networks, and hidden fees reach into the hundreds. Here are some tactics and strategies for staying in touch while trotting the globe.
Buy a Calling Card (In Advance)
If all else fails, there's always that pre-smartphone communication innovation, the calling card. For those without a compatible international smartphone, or who don't want to futz with apps or other internet-based services, relatively cheap calling rates can be had with a pre-paid card and a local landline (such as 14.5 cents per minute from Brazil to the US). To avoid hidden fees or outright scams, buy before flying, from reputable online resellers like ZapTel.
