Separate the Husks
Winnowing, separating the husks from the nibs, is easily accomplished with a hair drier and a large bowl. Start with the hair drier on a low cool setting from 5 feet away and watch what as the flat, lightweight husks blow out of the bowl and heavier nibs stay in the bowl. Keep moving the mass with your hands to expose all the husks. If all the husks don't blow away the hair drier is not close enough. If you start blowing nibs out of the bowl you are getting too close. You soon learn exactly what setting to use on the hair drier and how far to hold it from the bowl, so that all the husks blow away and the nibs remain in the bowl. Needless to say, do this step outside.
