Stay Physically and Mentally Active
"It really is super important to stay physically active and mentally active," says Clark. "The trick is not to do passive activities like watching TV. Active doings would be reading or doing math problems. There are all sorts of studies that show the guys who are the most active hold up longer." And it doesn't matter what you read, as long as it keeps you thinking, Clark adds.
Getting a consistent workout schedule helps, too. "For ensuring that your longer-term memory remains sharp, it is important to recognize that your brain is a biological organ that is connected to the rest of your body," says David Gallo, who researchers the neurocognitive processes of memory at the University of Chicago. "Thus, the same advice for keeping good physical health (proper diet, exercise, and sleep) also applies to keeping good mental health." Gallo adds that you should also keep up positive social interactions and avoid stress, since research shows it can improve cognitive functions like memory.
