Check your local laws.
Before you dive too deeply into aspirations of becoming an apiarist, make sure you know what your local laws say about beekeeping. Some areas only allow beekeeping on land zoned for agriculture and many have regulations about how many bees a person can keep. It is also common for states to require registration of beekeeping operations, which may include annual fees. You can check the rules on the Apiary Inspectors of America's website. It’s not necessarily a legal issue but you should also check in with people who live nearby to see if anyone is severely allergic to bee stings.
