First check whether you need seeds or seedlings for the plants you'd like to grow. Then follow the directions on the label for the right time to plant, but ignore the row spacing guides. A much smarter way to garden, as outlined in Mel Bartholomew's classic book Square Foot Gardening, is to plant your different vegetables within square-foot increments rather than in rows.
