The living room should make every visitor feel right at home, from parents, to friends, to dates who end up at your place. "Make it masculine, but not too masculine," says Robin Baron of Robin Baron Design. "Decorate with unexpected pieces that represent you." This can include everything from clever lighting choices to vintage items.
But diversify your sources when buying, explains Jennifer Morris of JMorris Design. "One of the biggest mistakes you can make is looking like you got everything from one store, or like your parents gave you their basement hand-me-downs."
For a final touch, the right color can give the living room a much-needed refresh. "Look to men's suiting and shirting for a color palette inspiration — think pinstripes, tweeds, leather, and crisp lines," says Hannah Yeo, Benjamin Moore color and design expert. "Navy, charcoal, a range of grays, warm tans, and white can be used in combinations that are apt to complement existing furniture while taking the look up a notch." A brown leather sofa against a wall painted in Newburyport Blue or Boothbay Gray is a solid, sophisticated choice.
