Day Two: Aix en Provence to Bonnieux, 47 miles
From Aix, begin making your way to Bonnieux, a small city tucked into the picturesque Luberon region. The terrain will be rolling but not mountainous, this is Provence's hill country. As you ride you'll pass many of the lavender farms that Provence is famous for.
You'll know you're close to Bonnieux when you see a church steeple rising in the horizon. This town is perched on a hillside and no matter what direction you arrive from, the steeple is the first thing you'll see. Take the afternoon to explore Bonnieux's old stone buildings, many of which were built in the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries. Also not to be missed is the Boulangerie Museum, a museum devoted to chronicling France's collective obsession with bread and pastry. Stay the night at the friendly Le Clos du Buis. Spacious, light-filled rooms and warm hosts make this a terrific landing spot for the evening, but the next morning's breakfast is not to be missed.
