Celebrating New Year's Eve in Montana, 2003

In the U.S., state troopers repeatedly steer Bushby off major highways and to winding side roads. He is about to cross from Montana into Canada when he decides to step into a bar to ring in the New Year. He leaves the Beast outside, where it is promptly stolen: "My gear, passport, photos, maps, details of every spot I'd pitched my tent, gone." Some drunk locals offer to drive him around to search for the thief, but they soon get into a car accident and are apprehended by the same police officers to whom Karl had reported the theft.
