Room Reeks of Smoke or Smells Funky
The better hotels recognize that people have allergies to smoke, mildew, and dust. This is the reason why hotels keep the room as dry as possible because mildew is impossible to get rid of. If your hotel room stinks, simply ask for another room. I know you're tired after a long day and would just like to lie down, but this is part of travel. Once I'm in my room, I always do a quick check. Is it noisy? Can I hear the elevator? Does the room smell? Has the bathroom been properly cleaned? A quick look around to approve what you're buying is not a bad idea.
If you disapprove, make it immediately known to the front desk. Don't say my room is lousy and demand another room. People can discount opinions but not facts. Be specific and say, "I entered the room and distinctly smelled stale cigarette smoke. That is something that bothers me greatly. Can you please find me a room where there's no smell of cigarette smoke?" Approach them in a businesslike manner and make it easy for them to help you. You'd be surprised at how generous they can be, often giving me a suite when there is no other room.
