For years, the perfect mixer has been right under our noses, chilling in our fridge: beer. "We use these amazing ingredients," says Alex Gregg of Houston's Anvil Bar & Refuge, "and then you look at the taps and think, 'Why don't I play around with some of that great beer?'" Working with beer cocktails at home doesn't require a lot of skill, just a basic understanding of how to properly pair spirits and beers – like the pros did in these six recipes. Launch Gallery >>
The Honey Beer
Think of this as an extra-dry gin and tonic. Created by Jill Schulster, co-owner of the East Village bistro JoeDoe, the Honey Beer is a little sweet, salty, and bracingly lemony.
Honey, kosher salt
1.5 oz DH Krahn gin (or similar citrusy gin)
1 oz lemon juice
2 oz Dale's Pale Ale (or similar malty ale)
Dip the rim of the glass in honey and salt. Shake gin and lemon juice with ice, strain into glass with ice, and top with beer.
