People need oxygen to live and breath, so it must be good for our skin, right? Not so, says Dr. Draelos. "Oxygen does nothing for the skin. Exposing the skin to more oxygen can create free radicals that can prematurely age the skin."
But many spas are using oxygen in treatments to increase pressure on the skin to attempt to increase the delivery of topicals, such as antioxidants, caviar, and collagen. The trend is rooted in a few medical studies that use hyperbaric pressure to improve wound healing in people with poor circulation, and Oprah popularized its use in facials. But the science isn't there to justify this expensive treatment that potentially could cause skin damage. "In theory that makes sense, but no one has studied this stuff," says Dr. Hollmig.
Verdict: Save your money, and just get the basic facial and apply topicals (like antioxidants and Retin-A) yourself at home daily.
