Chhongba Sherpa: In Base Camp
Chhongba Sherpa, a camp worker for Adventure Consultants, was outside with a friend when a wall of snow began hurtling towards Base Camp. "I heard this huge noise, I saw the avalanche coming, and ran into our mess tent with several of my friends," said Chhongba Sherpa through translator Karma Sherpa. "The noise kept getting louder, and the ground kept shaking. Then everything went dark." As the avalanche ripped through the heart of Base Camp, it flattened Adventure Consultants' headquarters (they lost six staff members in the avalanche). Chhongba was knocked unconscious and buried under the snow. After three-to-four hours he awoke with his head throbbing and leg in pain. He was flown by helicopter to Lukla where he spent two days in the hospital and then was flown to Kathmandu. "I have nothing left, not even a coat; everything was lost in the avalanche. I just found out a couple of days ago another of my friends (Jangbu Sherpa) just died from his injuries. I don’t know what I am going to do during the monsoon season since my leg is broken." Donations for Chhongba and his other six injured Sherpa friends along with the six dead are being taken at Adventure Consultants' Sherpa Future Fund. All money donated will go to them and their families.
