Novak Djokovic gets his racquet on almost every serve, like Roger Federer, and still manages to be aggressive, like Andre Agassi. Djokovic's speed and short backswings allow him to crowd the baseline on his returns and hit the ball on the rise, leaving opponents less time to react. "But you have to have unreal anticipation to do that," says Macci.
The lesson: When facing a strong serve, don't stand as close to the net as Djokovic stands, but copy his technique. "Club players should stand farther back and give themselves more time," suggests Macci. Reduce your backswings on your returns, and use the pace of your opponent's serve against him.
