A recent (and blissfully kid-free) entry into Palm Springs' bountiful boutique hotel scene, Sparrows Hotel was opened in late 2013 by Doug Smith, the hospitality guru behind nearby Korakia Pensione. Look for a sign in the form of a silhouetted sparrow peeking out from the hedges along East Palm Canyon Drive to find this 19-room property built around an original fifties barn. Inspired by the minimalism of Japanese ryokans and set around a sparkling centerpiece pool, the guest rooms all have private outdoor fireplaces and are decorated with bespoke redwood furniture. Luxurious soaking tubs are made from re-purposed horse troughs. No, it's not the Ace; it's more original. [Rooms from $175; sparrowshotel.com]
