Gracias Madre (San Francisco)
It seems impossible, but it was true up until recently: before Gracias Madre, there were no Mexican restaurants in the Bay Area that served vegan food. Part of the Café Gratitude family, Gracias Madre recently opened in the Mission District to rave reviews and a packed house nearly every day. The chefs' passion for Mexican and Spanish flavors comes through in every dish; the menu doesn't skimp on spices and creaminess just because the enchiladas are made with cashew cheese. Customers consistently order the vegan flan, which critics call indistinguishable from its non-vegan cousin, and the sweet potato and caramelized onion quesadillas with pumpkin seed salsa.
