When we recommend sun-soaked, warm-weather destinations - say, on the beach or in the jungle – the daily temperature usually tops off at 90 F. Anything above this is just unpleasant. Some places, however, are worth seeking out even though they're so blistering hot you'll have to prepare yourself to be uncomfortable. For these 10 worthy hot spots – with average temperatures well over 100 F – bring lots of water, sunscreen, a good hat, and, if you can help it, have a room with air conditioning.
The city of Timbuktu is one of Africa's most important cultural sites, dating back to at least the 5th century. It has played a major role in the development of Islam, thanks to Mansa Musa's decision to select it as the site for his Great Mosque 700 years ago. It's also one of the hottest places in the world, with temperatures exceeding or approaching 100 F year-round.
