Kalalau Trail & Hanakapiai Beach, Hawaii
The Kalalau Trail on the island of Kauai offers everything an adventurer could ever want from a hike in Hawaii: isolated jungle terrain, volcanic slopes, rocky cliffs, and undeveloped beaches. The trail itself poses challenges such as three stream crossings that flood easily and falling rock near waterfalls — and with no real community help nearby in case of accidents. Hanakapai Beach, about 2 miles from the trailhead, offers stunning views of crystal-blue Pacific waters, but don’t plan on taking a dip to cool off. More than 100 people have died because of powerful rip currents caused by tidal changes and trade winds that will sweep you out to sea even when the water appears calm. And no, there aren't lifeguards on duty.
