Whether it involves a food fight, mermaids or a torch-lit procession, people the world over know how to have a good time. Here are some of the biggest, boldest, booziest celebrations around, along with some tips to get the full experience.
Canstatter Volksfest: Stuttgart, Germany
Munich's massive Oktoberfest gets all the attention, but this three-week festival celebrating the autumnal harvest in Stuttgart provides all the suds you can drink with smaller crowds and a sort of souped-up, county-fair atmosphere. There are seven different tents to choose from, and if you get there early enough, you won't have trouble finding a spot. If you plan on coming later in the day or on a weekend, it's a good idea to get tickets in advance.
